Pastor’s Corner 2/8/2026
Dear Church Friends,
If an epiphany is a sudden illumination, a flash of light, a revelation - how does it age? This Sunday is the penultimate week of the season after Epiphany. This is the season we reflect on how the nature of Jesus Christ was illuminated through his baptism by John, his visitation by the Magi, and his revealing of the nature of God's Kingdom through teachings like the beatitudes. This week we'll hear another Jesus classic about God's people being like salt and light (Matt 5:13-20).
The metaphor is bottomless with meaning. Salt is coarse, disinfecting, preserving, and ridiculously tasty. If a person is dehydrated, salt will help save their life.
Humans are diurnal creatures (active by day). For most of us, light is an empowering, educating, beautifying, and life-saving element. Light feels safer than darkness. Light is fun to play with, from mood lighting to flood lights.
The final part of the idea (Matt 5:16) urges you to let your light shine so that others may see it. Each of you has wisdom to impart. You are living lives of practical holiness and godliness. Coming together in worship, in acts of service, or simply in socializing and support is like putting together many candles.
May your light shine this week, and bring beauty, peace, and joy to those around you.
